Do Glasses Spoil Your Eyes? Let’s Set the Record Straight

You’ve probably heard it before:

"Ever since I started wearing glasses, my eyes have gotten worse!" It’s one of the most common concerns I hear as an optometrist. But is it true? Do glasses actually spoil your eyes?

Watch this video for a quick explanation:

The Short Answer: No, Glasses Don’t Damage Your Eyes

Let’s break this down. Glasses are simply tools that correct how light enters your eye — they don’t alter your eye structure or worsen your eyesight.

So why does it feel like your eyes get worse after wearing glasses?

Why People Think Glasses Make Eyes Worse

It’s often a matter of perception. Here’s why:

Adaptation: When you wear glasses, your brain adapts to clearer vision. Taking them off suddenly makes your uncorrected vision feel worse than before — even though it hasn’t actually changed.

Progression: Some eye conditions, like myopia (short-sightedness), naturally worsen over time, especially in younger people. It’s the eye changing — not the glasses causing harm.

Timing: Many people only get glasses after their vision has already started worsening. Glasses get blamed simply because they showed up late in the story.

In Fact, Not Wearing Glasses Might Do More Harm

For children and young adults, leaving refractive errors uncorrected can lead to:

  • Eye strain and fatigue
  • Headaches
  • Poor academic or work performance
  • In some cases, progression of conditions like myopia may even speed up

What You Should Do

  • If you’ve been prescribed glasses, wear them as advised.
  • Visit an optometrist regularly — especially if your vision changes.
  • Don’t be afraid of glasses — they’re there to help you see better, not make things worse.

Thanks @kabusi for such a learning piece. For all the readers to appreciate, glasses most often do not treat the error, they only correct it, implying when you remove them, do not Alwys expect to see better. We can use an analogy of a “walking stick”. You will most probably walk steadily with a walking stick (the frail and the elderly). And when the walking is later abandoned, you go back to your old self of unstable walking patterns. So get your eyes examined by a professional , and if advised to take up glasses, kindly follow the doctors advise.
